Presentation by Ronnie Steele

‘Build It For Barry’, ‘A Blue Plaque For Brian Glover’ and ‘Norman Rimmington – Forever One Of Our Own’.

Barnsley Civic Trust is delighted to present a talk by local author, Ronnie Steele: Dramatic tales of Barry Hines, Brian Glover, and Norman Rimmington —and growing up in the 1960s! The talk will be held in the Council Chamber at Barnsley Town Hall, commencing at 6.30pm, on Thursday 25th January 2024.

Encouraged by author, Milly Johnson, and sculptor, Graham Ibbeson, Ronnie wrote stories about his heroes and published three highly acclaimed books containing 70 tales about growing up in Barnsley.

28 years a teacher in Barnsley, Ronnie seized the opportunity of honouring his favourite teachers, Barry Hines, author of Kes, and actor, Brian Glover who taught him at Longcar Central School during the 1960s, before they became famous. Norman Rimmington, of course, is a legendary figure of Barnsley FC.

Ronnie led projects for a statue in honour of Barry Hines, and a Barnsley Civic Trust Blue Plaque for Brian Glover.

We were pleased to see Barnsley Chronicle’s article about Ronnie’s talk …

50 Buildings Talk on June 8th

— Views arising from the preparation of the book.

Many of us have views on notable buildings in Barnsley, new or old.

Here’s a chance to hear from Keiron Dunn, author of ‘50 Buildings in Barnsley’, a book in the “50 Buildings of” series.

Keiron is a former planner in Barnsley and intends to share his views on Barnsley’s buildings and the changes that have taken place over the years.

What do we think about:
—The merits of knocking things down, or retaining our heritage?
—Why some people love a new building and others hate it?
—The town centre after all the pain?

Keiron has another book in preparation and he would be interested in reflecting our ideas on Barnsley’s buildings.

Come along to participate in the discussion or to hear the views expressed. All welcome.

A short Barnsley Civic Trust annual general meeting will take place before the talk

Local Listing heritage project

Do you know of important and cherished buildings, monuments and structures in Barnsley that are not protected?

‘Local Listing’ can help give them some protection against demolition, removal or harmful modification. [Only those of national significance can have statutory listed building status.]

There’s a talk on 1st December to tell us about how we can protect Barnsley’s heritage through ‘Local Listing’.

It’s by Sarah Cattell from South Yorkshire Archaeological Service; Sarah is leading the South Yorkshire Heritage Listing Project.

The project is anxious to use the local knowledge of societies like the BCT to identify the buildings and built structures that we think ought to be listed.

All are welcome whether or not you are BCT members. The talk is at 7.00pm on Wednesday 1st December at the Masonic Hall in Cockerham Lane, off Huddersfield Road, Barnsley S75 1AT.

The Hidden Art of Barnsley

During a period extending over the late 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, a series of wonderful artists emerged in Barnsley.

Barnsley Art on Your Doorstep, a project running from 2012-2014, explored and showcased this rich and very often forgotten aspect of Barnsley’s heritage.

The results: a book  – available for reference in Barnsley Library, a website, and an exhibition at the Cooper Gallery.

Barnsley Civic Trust is delighted to host an illustrated talk and presentation on ‘The Hidden Art of Barnsley: Monday 2nd March at 7.00pm.
The Lightbox – Barnsley’s Central Library.

Art on Your Doorstep team members – Sally Hayles, Hugh Polehampton, Maureen Wilkinson and Fred Thompson – will provide a visual tour of the 2014 exhibition and discuss the publication and its research.

A unique event – not to be missed. Open to all.
