‘The Lancasters, a Barnsley Dynasty’: Thursday 23 January

James Steverson, Barnsley Archives’ Project Archivist, gave an illustrated talk ‘Lancaster and Sons: A Barnsley Dynasty‘, was given by James Stevenson. Full of interesting information, it was much appreciated by those who attended.

This is the fascinating story of one of Barnsley’s most interesting and influential families, the Lancasters, who rose to become prominent auctioneers, valuers and estate agents for more than four generations.

This talk was first hosted by the Friends of Barnsley Archives in September but was rerun as an evening event due to popular demand. Ans some people came to hear it a second time!

Held in association with Barnsley Archives and Local Studies, here’s an image taken by Paul Stebbing of the event.

  1. I attended the talk yesterday and enjoyed it. Clearly a lot of work had gone into it. I started at Lancasters straight from school in 1975 eventually becoming a director before leaving in 1993 though I continued in the property and estate agency business all my working life. I overlapped with GL Stirling who had joined the last member of the Lancaster family as a business partner, even filling in one of the red valuation books on an inspection near Locke Park. My father who died last year, aged almost 99, had a lifelong association with St Edwards Church as worshipper, choirboy, choir master and organist and he would almost certainly have been at the garden parties. My school, Holgate Grammar School, had a house system, three of them being Lancaster, Keresforth and Sadler so I feel that one way or another the Lancaster dynasty has touched my life.
