Courthouse Campus Master Plan

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

A draft Courthouse Campus Master Plan has been prepared for Barnsley Council funded by Yorkshire Forward as part of a programme to help bring about urban renaissance.

The Courthouse campus is the largest remaining development site in the town centre.  Situated behind the Courthouse Pub and covers the area of open car parking extending to Old Mill Lane.  The old railway yards are identified for mixed use development in long term plans for the town, which could provide hundreds of jobs as well as a belvedere park and living accommodation.  Whilst the development of green space will bring many benefits the main reason for the development, which may take up to 20 years to complete, is economic.  The site already has the Digital Media Centre and the recently completed Core building, the designs of which will set the high standard required for this important quarter of the town. High quality architectural design, massing, heights of buildings and the quality of public spaces within the site are all covered in the master plan.

The draft proposals were the subject of public consultation last year when many Civic Trust Members visited the exhibition of proposals to give their views.
